Just One Bite: 13 Gypsies Risotto

One of the best dishes I’ve tried lately came during a business meeting at 13 Gypsies. I admit that at first I was skeptical. The Man lived in that neighborhood when I met him, just down the street at the corner of Myra and Stockton. Ten years ago, we called that the corner of Crack & Pipe. However, a tiny resurgent pocket of beautiful resistance is forming on Stockton Street between College and Myra. 13 Gypsies seems to be leading that charge into renewal.

CLOSED: The Bridge – Ponte Vedra Beach

::Tastecasting is not an unbiased restaurant review. If you are unfamiliar with Tastecasting, please learn more at “What Is Tastecasting?”::
NOTE: THE BRIDGE CLOSED IN NOVEMBER 2011
Five of the Tastecasting members were recently treated to an evening out at The Bridge in Ponte Vedra Beach.
It’s not the easiest place to find on the First Coast, but if you’re willing to seek it out, you will be justly rewarded.

Review: Bowl of Pho Restaurant

A new restaurant has been causing quite a buzz around Southside these days. Bowl of Pho Vietnamese restaurant opened recently at the corner of Old Baymeadows and Southside Blvd. I had heard good things, so this Saturday I dropped in to give it a try.
First, forget everything you may believe about pho places. The usual scruffy hole-in-the-wall is a bygone memory at Bowl of Pho. The place is clean and inviting with beautiful decor and a pleasing atmosphere. I excused myself to wash my hands before being seated and found …

Tastecasting: Yogaberry

::Tastecasting is not an unbiased restaurant review. If you are unfamiliar with Tastecasting, please learn more at “What Is Tastecasting?”::
I visited Yogaberry at the St. Johns Town Center this past week with the rest of the Tastecasting crew. The owner of the franchise, Jennifer Turner, began by telling us how she started Yogaberry by developing her own recipe four years ago. The frozen yogurt is gluten-free, fat-free and organic. No artificial sweeteners or flavors are used in the product, though a sugar-free version will be coming out in the next month.

Review: Fu Hao Bistro (CLOSED)

This past Wednesday night I decided to take a few of my fellow bloggers along to try out the new Fu Hao Bistro on Park Street in Five Points. When we entered we found a very modern, beautifully appointed dining room. It is a very calming and clean place with a Zen feel to it. The dining room is split into two parts, but it manages to feel very quiet and intimate.

Five Minutes with Chef Tom Gray (Bistro AIX)

It’s official – Folio Weekly has declared Chef Tom Gray Jacksonville’s favorite chef. After my five minutes with Chef Gray, I have to say that I agree. I met Chef Gray at the Riverside Arts Market Toyota Hybrid Farm to Table event on Saturday, October 10, 2009. By the time I caught him, he was already knee-deep in paella.

Recent Shutdown of the Mossfire Grill

I do a lot of reporting here on EatJax about restaurant inspections. I’ve actually become rather difficult to surprise, but on September 16th, one of the most popular and highly rated restaurants in Jacksonville was shut down due to inspection violations. I’ve reported here about violations numbering well into the 30s, 40s and even 50s, but with 22 violations – 9 critical, the Mossfire Grill in Riverside was closed down as a hazard.

Hall of Shame: Sushi Edition (10/2/09)

Sushi is one of my favorite meals and it’s growing in popularity everyday here in Jacksonville. Sushi is considered a “more dangerous food” by some people because it usually involves some sort of raw fish. Some folks refuse to eat sushi at all, but most people will agree to tag along for cooked options then venture a taste of the good stuff.
A reader named Lauren contacted EatJax asking about her favorite sushi place, Yo Sushi, after our last Hall of Shame. She sounded a bit concerned about the place, as …

Hall Of Shame »

Crime numbers may be down this year in Jacksonville, but it seems that crimes against food (and the people who love it) are holding steady.
We here at EatJax take food safety very seriously. Our new “Hall of Shame” feature is designed to inform you about the worst of the worst here in Jacksonville. We’ll be doing regular updates to let you know which restaurants in our area have high numbers of inspection violations so you can steer clear. You can also help warn your fellow Jax neighbors about bad food, …
