My favorite thing about food writing is finding a restaurant that is under-appreciated. Tucked away in a blocky strip mall on Merrill Road, one might drive past Tabouleh every day for years without noticing it. One would be missing out.

Is it possible to melt the icy heart of the city’s biggest St. Johns Town Center grinch? With a CHAIN restaurant? All I can say is, if Seasons 52 is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

Eat Up Downtown’s purpose is clear — draw Jacksonville’s citizenry away from their favorite outlying restaurants and into downtown.  Some of the most highly regarded establishments in the city trot out their three course prix fixe menus once a year for the low, low price of $25. Galloping hordes of diners (in theory) pour into their chairs, sample the fare and establish a relationship that will last the whole year through. So, what happened at Indochine?

I’ll be honest – Arlington is not a hotbed of culinary excitement. Even the extended areas of Regency and “Down University” seem to be one never ending strip mall filled with fast food, megachains and questionable Chinese buffets. However, we have one thing that you can’t get anywhere else in Jax – the best doughnuts. Ever.

On April 28, 2011 many local restaurants in our area will be donating a percentage of their proceeds to fight the growing epidemic of AIDS on the First Coast. The 2011 Dining Out For Life event will benefit Northeast Florida AIDS Network (NFAN), a non-profit organization that serves the city’s more than 1,500 HIV and AIDS patients.

A large part of my life is spent looking for unique food experiences. As foodies this can lead us to the rare, expensive, difficult and fussy. But deep down we know there is a holy grail. South Florida favorite Pollo Tropical (say Poy-oh Trop-eh-Cal -as in Cal-ifornia) is opening November 22 at the Markets at Town Center near Toys R Us.
I headed down on Friday afternoon for a sneak peek tasting and I was pleasantly surprised.
