Top Chef: Las Vegas Ep. 2
Ok before I start with my Top Chef article, I have one huge complaint for BravoTV. How many commercials do I have to be hit over the head with for The Real Housewives of Atlanta? I mean who really watches that stuff. Anyway, enough of my rant with that pathetic excuse for TV and back to Top Chef. Last night was the brothers episode, with Michael V. taking the Quickfire and Bryan V. taking the Elimination challenge. They both look like they will be their till the end this season. If I had to pick a favorite of the two, I think it would be a Michael, Bryan looks like he is wound a little too tight.
Episode 2 started with the normal Quickfire challenge. The challenge was that each chef had to roll two dice on a craps table and whatever number they rolled was the amount of ingredients they had to use in this 30 minute challenge. The guest Judge was Todd English, known for his award winning restaurants and critically acclaimed cookbooks. The winner of this challenge would receive a $15K chip from the M Resort and Casino and also immunity from the shows Elimination challenge. Michael Voltaggio won the Quickfire with a Nitro Gazpacho with Compressed Cucumbers and Toast.
On to the shows Elimination challenge, which was a Bachelor/Bachelorette party challenge. The chefs were split up into two teams, in a “battle of the sexes” format, with the guys making the food for the bride and her friends and the ladies making the food for the groom and his friends. The food was going to be served poolside under the hot Las Vegas sun, which always throws a wrench in a few chefs’ plates. Another twist on the challenge was the bride and groom had 3 shots they wanted the chefs to base their dishes around. The shots were a Moscow Mule, a shot of Tequila, and a Golden Delicious, click on their names for the recipes.

The wedding party seemed to enjoy all of the food and even the judges only found a few dishes they were critical of. This year’s chefs seem to really be ahead of previous seasons. The men won the challenge and the four that were considered the best last night on the men’s team were Hector, Eli, Bryan V. and Michael V. Hector even got their with a tofu dish, which I found a nice rebound after the deep frying the steak episode of last week. Bryan V. won the Elimination challenge with a Sweet and Sour Macaroon filled with Guacamole, Corn Nuts and Corn Puree. He said it was his play on chips and guac. With Michael V. winning the Quickfire and Bryan V. wining the Elimination, it looks like the sibling rivalry will make for some good TV this season.
Then the ladies were called out by the lowest four of the group, which were Eve, Jesse, Preeti, and Ashley. Ashley probably should not have been out there, but I think her choice of making two dishes backfired on her and put her in the judges’ crosshairs. Jesse seems like she is a good chef but just can’t get it together during the challenges, I don’t expect her to last too much longer, being she was in the bottom group on the first two episodes. But the one to get the boot this week was Eve Aronoff. She probably would have got the boot last week if Jen Z. made anything other than that Saitan dish she made. Eve seems like a nice person, but she is lost on that show and totally out of her league. I find it absolutely amazing that she even owns her own restaurant and that it stays in business. Well that’s my summary of last nights show, see ya next week.
Also, they said after the show last night that you can find the winning recipes on BravoTV.com, but I went on and only found last week’s winner, Kevin Gillespie’s Arctic Char recipe. Enjoy.
